Badinage (Wall Assemblages with cut rubber and other elements)
Badinage (a French term for word play) was an invitational solo exhibition sponsored by the Mirabella Foundation for their eight Westlake Avenue storefront windows. Opening with the May 2015 South Lake Union Artwalk, it remained on view for six months.
Work for the exhibit combined painting, drawing, forged copper and metal, knit wire, and collage of unique hand-cut rubber elements, to create colorful and intricate musings on the secret dream life of words.
The assemblages, or dimensional paintings, of colorful abstract and familiar forms included sculptural elements that jutted out of the compositional frame and into space to create additional layers of shadows and movement.
Key elements of the pieces are free-form shapes that are scissor-cut from defective and surplussed rubber playground balls. These shapes, with their vivid colors and the eerily visceral surface of the familiar rubber playground balls, provide an evocative conceptual overlay around which the compositions are built.
